These amazing passage tombs are estimated to be over 5000 years old which makes them older than the Egyptian pyramids. These prehistoric sacred sites are aligned in such a way so that the rays of the rising sun on the spring and autumnal equinoxes light up the tunnel leading to the heart of the mound. The site has a commanding view. Even with the rain and clouds last night I could still see the Wicklow/Dublin mountains (to the southeast), the Mournes (to the north east), a
One more aerial shot of the most famous passage tomb in Ireland - Newgrange. The massive mound sits on a small hill overlooking the Boyne river valley. The whole area is littered with prehistoric sites... but none can compare with Newgrange. The white stone front and enormous carved stones around it must have been an impressive sight 5,000 years ago! I know that it is today!! #history #livinghistory #drone #sunset #meath #landscape
Sunset at Newgrange. I had a blast exploring this world heritage site from the air the other evening! Newgrange is truly an amazing place to catch a sunset or sunrise. This prehistoric sacred spot was built around 3200BC and was designed in such a way that light would only enter a small shaft in the mount and illuminate the interior of the mound on the winter solstice. This world heritage site is older than Stonehenge and the pyramids. #history #sunset #sunflare #sheep #me
I absolutely love the Hill of Tara! The history of this place is amazing! It once was the seat of the Árd Rí na hÉireann, or the High King of Ireland, and is thought to have been a place where 142 kings made sacrifices during the pagan / prehistoric days of Ireland. This sacred site was believed to have been the dwelling place of gods and an entrance into the afterlife. That is until St. Patrick came here and confronted the pagan religion in a gutsy move. It is hard to believe that we had to put my sister and her family on an airplane this morning... We had an absolute blast getting to share our little corner of the world with them! It just went too quickly! I'll be posting photos over the next few days/week... for now - I'll share just a couple of quick pics from Trim Castle (built 1172). This amazing ruin of a castle was one of the best we have ever visited in Ireland. I'm glad that we got to see it for the first time w
